- Story Text: In an unexpected stop over ahead of her historic trip to Libya, U.S.
Secretary of State Condolezza Rice arrived in Lisbon late on Thursday (September 4) and met with Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates.
Rice, who is expected to meet Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi on her Sept. 5-7 trip, held a 45 minute meeting with Socrates at his residence in Lisbon. There was no official information by the State Department or the Portuguese government about the issues addressed during the meeting.
Rice is expected to hold a bilateral meeting on Friday (September 5) with Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado, followed by a joint news conference. On Friday afternoon the U.S. Secretary of State will leave for Libya. She will also visit Maghreb nations Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
