- Story Text: Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos condemns bombing in Mallorca which killed two police officers. Moratinos made the comments during an official visit to Brazil.
Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos condemned on Thursday (July 30) a car bomb attack blamed on the separatist rebel group ETA.
The bomb - placed under a police car - killed two officers on the Spanish holiday island of Mallorca.
Moratinos, who met Brazil's Foreign Minister Celso Amorim in Brasilia, is on a two-day official visit to the South American country to boost trade and discuss the crisis in Honduras.
On Wednesday ETA was also blamed for a similar attack in the northern Spanish city of Burgos, injuring 46 people.
In a news conference after a closed meeting with Amorim, Moratinos said Spain would hunt down all terrorists.
"I believe this is a message we must send out to terrorists, that they will not be given any opportunity to avoid justice and the international community is united to eradicate terrorism and in the battle against ETA," he said.
Security forces believe the Basque rebel group, weakened by arrests of top leaders, is trying to put on a show of force to prove it is still able to strike at the Spanish state and to maintain morale among its supporters.
Amorim also condemned the bombings and said Brazil would fully support Spain in its battle against terrorist groups.
"Brazil has sent, the Brazilian government has sent out a statement and that was how we began our conversation today, regretting the terrorist attacks, regretting and condemning the terrorist attacks which are totally unacceptable. This is a practice Brazil does not accept and we have full solidarity for the Spanish people," he told reporters.
The Socialist government broke off peace talks with ETA after the rebels killed two people with a car bomb at Madrid airport in December 2006.
Moratinos, who arrived from a three-day visit to Venezuela, is travelling along with a group of Spanish businessmen in an effort to seal partnerships with Brazilian companies.
Over 300 Spanish firms have branches in Brazil, which have invested over 20 billion euros in the country over the past 15 years -- only behind U.S. companies. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
