- Story Text: A relative calm swept across the front line near the Libyan city of Misrata on Thursday (June 9), a day after fierce clashes between rebel forces and troops loyal to Muammar Gaddafi.
Thousands of pro-government troops advanced on Misrata on Wednesday (June 8), shelling it from three sides in attacks that killed at least 12 rebels, according to a rebel spokesman.
But a day later there was little sign of activity in Dafniah on the western front line.
"Everything is very quite today , thank god there is no clashes today," one rebel fighter said.
Gaddafi troops and the rebels have been deadlocked for weeks, with neither side able to hold territory on a road between Ajdabiyah in the east, which Gaddafi forces shelled on Monday, and the Gaddafi-held oil town of Brega further west.
Rebels control the east of Libya, the western city of Misrata and the range of western mountains near the border with Tunisia.
They have been unable to advance on the capital against Gaddafi's better-equipped forces, despite a recent spate of NATO bombing raids on the city. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
