- Story Text: Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos held meetings with Israeli counterpart Avigdor Liberman and Defence Minister Ehud Barak on Monday (February 1), and called for the resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians.
"I will put all my capacities. I know that the parties are the ones who have to make the decision but I will work to promote, to really facilitate that the two sides start immediately. That's quite urgent to resume talks and bring together for a final settlement," Moratinos said in his meeting with Barak.
Barak also said that there was a need to relaunch peace talks in the region.
"We are looking forward together about how the European Union can help both us and the Palestinians relaunch or resume peace negotiations in the region," Barak said.
Later on Monday, Moratinos is expected to hold a news conference in Jerusalem. On Tuesday, he is expected to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad in the West BanK city of Ramallah.
Moratinos said in December that Spain, which took over the EU presidency for six months in January, would strive for quick talks between Israel and the Palestinians. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
