- Story Text: Malaysian companies SP Setia Bhd and Sime Darby Bhd have won the right to redevelop Battersea Power Station, which has been a recognisable London landmark for 80 years.
They beat a rival bid from Chelsea Football Club, which was looking to move its stadium to the building.
Some 15 competitors submitted plans last month. The Malaysian companies will acquire the site which is 15 hectares large and sits on the bank of the river Thames, for 400 million pounds. They will create a new underground station on the site, as part of wider plans to extend the London's Northern Line underground rail.
The power station stopped generating electricity in 1983, and has since suffered from several failed attempts at redevelopment. Owners and buyers are currently in talks, before the planned "multi-use real estate regeneration project" can begin at this historic site. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
