Spaniards Sergei Bruguera defeated home-crowd favourite Omar Camporese in the final of the second Milan tennis tie-break "shootout" on Sunday (November 10).
Bruguera, a 20-year-old ranked 15th in the world, won 200,000 dollars (U.S.) after playing 9 tie breaks in 78 minutes.
For 10,000 fans who crowded the Assago Forum it was an unique opportunity to see eight of the world's best players in action in a single night.
Bruguera and Camporese, who have a history of failures in decisive matches of the major ATP tournaments, were surprise finalists in Milan as Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl, Guy Forget and Goran Ivanisevic were beaten along the way.
Taking risks in each of the best-of-three tie-breaks, Bruguera downed Yugoslav Ivanisevic 7-3, 3-7, 10-8 in the first round and last year's shootout winner Ivan Lendl 5-7, 8-6, 7-3 in the semifinal.
Camporese, ranked 24th in the world, upset American Andre Agassi 7-5, 3-7, 7-3 in the first round and Frenchman Forget 7-5, 4-7, 9-7 in the semifinal.
Lendl, who made a streak of unforced errors in the third decisive tie-breaker of the semifinals, had crushed last year's finalist Jonas Svensson of Sweden 7-5, 7-2 in the first round while Forget had been Yannick Noah, his Davis Cup captain, 7-4, 7-3.
