- Story Text: British and West German athletes, fresh from competition in the European championships earlier this month, today (Saturday) met for an international contest at London's Crystal Palace stadium. At the end of the first day's events, the Germans were ahead in both men's and women's competition. Among the German victories were Lutz Philipp in the 10,000 metres and Hildegard Falck in the Women's 800 metres, with sprint successes in both the men's and women's 100 metres. Britain salvaged some consolation with the victory of European silver medallist Alan Pascoe in the 110 metres hurdles.
SYNOPSIS: At London's Crystal Palace stadium, top athletes from Britain and West Germany meet in an international contest. Saturday was the first day and the Germans were off some quick successes. Mickler-Becker and Schittenhelm took first and second places in the women's 100 metres.
Now the men's hundred meters. Wuckerer of Germany powers ahead and stays in front. But Britain's Brian Green manages second place....
World record holder Heide Rosendahl carried German hopes in the long jump. But she was just beaten by British record holder Sheila Sherwood.
British athletes gave an even better account of themselves in the 110 metres hurdles. European silver medallist Alan Pascoe raced to the front and stayed there. Teammate Berwyn Pryce ran well to take second place.
Next, the 10,000 metres. European record holder Dave Bedford was not running for the British team on this occasion, and the way seemed clear to Manfred Letzerich, who set a new German record earlier this year. But it was teammate Lutz Philipp who finally romped home the winner.
In the women's 800 metres, German record holder Hildegard Falck notched another victory in the relatively slow time of two minutes five-point-two-seconds. Britain's Pat Lowe was runner-up, half a second behind.
