Pakistan has agreed to a Syrian offer to grant asylum to the three hijackers of a Pakistani airliner now at Damascus airport and to 54 political prisoners released by Pakistan. Unconfirmed reports said the hijackers agreed to give themselves up. They demanded the release of the political prisoners and held more than 100 hostages aboard the airliner, which was seized 12 days ago. Earlier today Pakistani information minister Zafar Ul Haq told a press conference in Damascus that he was grateful to Syria for their help.
The hostages were released when it became clear that both hijackers and prisoners would be given asylum by Syria. The release of the hostages brought an end to the longest ever hijack. After the hijackers surrendered their arms the hostages were led off the plane. Many were dazed as they left the aircraft which they initially boarded 13 days ago for an internal flight in Pakistan.
