General Augusto Pinochet of Chile was today (11/3) sworn in for a further period of eight years in power. His ministers were also sworn in, and the constitution, which was voted in last year, was formally approved. This gives him powers which are unprecedented in Chilean history. He will be head of state and head of the armed forces and president until 1989, when elections are scheduled to be held for the return to democracy. But left-wing parties will not be entitled to contest the elections. After the swearing in, General Pinochet went to the Casa de la Moneda, the former presidential palace which was badly damaged in the 1973 coup d'etat against President Allende, and which has only just been rebuilt.
