- Story Text: French Implementation Force (IFOR) troops extended their control around the Bosnian capital Sarajevo on Christmas Day (December 25.) They took over part of a large resort in Serb-held Ilidza, west of Sarajevo, that is to become NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) headquarters.
Soldiers brought furniture and essential supplies to hotels they were checking for mines.
The 3,500 French troops around Sarajevo have the most difficult role in the peace implementation process, supervising the handover of Serb-held suburbs to government control.
The Serbs have objected strongly and have threatened to flee, burning homes as they go, rather than accept government rule.
French NATO forces supervising a pullback of soldiers from key frontline flashpoints around Sarajevo said on Monday both Bosnian government and separatist Serb forces were obeying orders to abandon their positions.
Under the peace deal both the Moslem-led government army and separatist Serb forces must vacate selected positions to ease tension and prevent outbursts of violence that might destabilise the peace process in the Bosnian capital.
The Wednesday deadline is the first major test of the willingness of the armies to implement the Dayton, Ohio peace accords signed in Paris this month.
