- Story Text: Forty thousand balloons were released under the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Saturday (October 28) in memory of the 40,000 AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) victims in France.
According to Doctor Patrice Meyer, president of "Vaincre le Sida" (Conquer AIDS), the event was a way of visualising the public's support for the victims of this deadly disease in France, which has the largest number of sufferers in Europe.
Organiser Olivier Blancard, said half of the 40,000 victims had died from AIDS and the other half lived suffering daily with the disease and needed special support.
The public was invited to buy a balloon. All funds raised will go to the organisation's home nursing programme.
The balloons were released throughout the afternoon at the Champ de Mars at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
