- Story Text: INTRO: With a deal done to defuse Britain's beef crisis, European Union leaders on Saturday sat down to finalise a statement which they hope will send a signal of their intent to tackle unemployment across Europe.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- After clearing the decks of the rift over mad cow disease, differences on the best way to respond to a tide of the 18 million jobless in Europe, on Saturday (June 22) looked set to dominate the last day of a summit of European leaders in Florence.
On Friday, the leaders reached a compromise reconciling Britain's demand for a step-by-step end to a worldwide ban on its beef exports with other European Union (EU) states' insistence on strict public health guarantees.
British Prime Minister John Major claimed victory for his tactics of systematically obstructing EU business, which had infuriated London's partners.
Speaking on arrival at the summit meeting on Saturday, Major said these had been special circumstances and he may possibly not use these tactics again.
