- Story Text: Thousands of young students have clashed with police in downtown Santiago while demanding for the government to maintain a cap to public transportation for at least the next two years.
About 3,000 students clashed with police Thursday (August 1, 2002) in downtown Santiago de Chile while demanding price caps for public transportation for at least the next two years.
Water cannons were fired to disperse the demonstrators.
Police took several of them into custody, but there were no reports of injuries.
The demonstrators were demanding that city authorities maintain the price of rides in public microbuses at 100 pesos (about 0.14 U.S.) for the next two years.
The students gathered in Plaza Baquedano square and, according to authorities, destroyed store fronts, damaged vehicles and looted shops.
A group of about 1,000 students marched to the Ministry of Education to deliver a letter stating their position.
"We are protesting price hikes for public transportation.
There are many (students) that have no money. The police are the ones starting the violence. Just look," said one of the students while a police water cannon dispersed the crowd.
The demonstration turned violent when a group of young protesters, most of them masked, threw rocks to passing automobiles and into store-fronts. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
