- Story Text: A fish canning factory at Tema, in Ghana, which was one of the plants closed after the downfall of President Nkrumah in 1960, has recently been reopened, and should process about 20 tons of fish a day when at full capacity.
It is part of the Tema Food Complex, which was brought into action as part of Head of State, Colonel Ignatius Acheampong's' Feed Yourself' policy.
On the sardine production line, the fish are cleaned, cooked, mixed with oil and canned. The cans are sterilized. When it is in full operation, it will handle 5 tons of sardines a day. There are also facilities for canning mackerel, herring fillets, smoked herrings and Tuna fish. About 100 people are employed at the factory.
The aim is that the Tema Food Complex, which is near the harbour, should meet all home demands for processed fish. Last year's herring catch was the biggest for ten years, and additional storage facilities had to be built.
