- Story Text: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak arrived in Washington on Wednesday for talks with U.S. President George W. Bush at Camp David, where he is expected to urge Bush to support the declaration of a Palestinian state.
The motorcade carrying President Mubarak arrived at Blair House amid tight security, and he waved briefly for reporters after alighting from his car.
Mubarak is in town for talks with U.S. President George W. Bush, but his arrival Wednesday comes amidst word of a Palestinian suicide attack in Megiddo, Israel and fresh Israeli incursion into Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's compound.
Mubarak will meet with several senior Bush administration officials before holding talks with Bush at the presidential retreat in Camp David, Maryland.
Mubarak is expected to urge Bush to support the declaration of a Palestinian state, perhaps as soon as early next year.
Israeli Premier Ariel Sharon will see Bush on Monday (June 10) at the White House, a month after a previous visit was cut short by a suicide bombing near Tel Aviv in which 15 Israelis died.
White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said that after listening to Mubarak and Sharon, Bush would "determine if there's any additional actions the United States government needs to or should potentially take".
The United States and the European Union want to set up a Middle East conference this summer to bring the warring sides together.
European diplomatic sources say efforts to convene some sort of peace conference in the second half of July are on track despite the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East. But many details remain to be pinned down. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
