- Story Text: In just a few hours, Argentines have run the gamut of emotions from hope to angst to disappointment to pride and back to hope after losing to England 1-0 in the first round of World Cup competition.
Clad in the blue and white national colours, hopeful Argentines gathered before radios and television sets in homes, bars and even offices to watch the match against their historic rivals on Friday (June 07).
Crossing their fingers, groaning and clasping their heads in their hands with every shot, the fans' tense faces grew ever longer.
While deafening cheers from British fans echoed around the futuristic Sapporo stadium in Japan, where the game was played, Argentines' faces drooped considerably with British team captain David Beckham's goal in the first half.
In the highlight match of the first round between two of soccer's greatest rivals, British team captain Beckham netted a 43rd minute penalty to push his side into a narrow lead.
Argentina dominated after the break, but couldn't avoid suffering their first defeat in a competitive match since they lost 3-1 to Brazil in a qualifier in Sao Paulo in July 2000.
Fans filed silently back to work, bitter disappointment etched upon their faces.
"I want to die," said one woman flatly.
The gloominess didn't last long, however.
"We are going to beat Sweden and then we are going to return to beat England and we are going to win the World Cup.
Let's go Argentina!" said one man.
On the street, crowds gathered chanting, cheering and singing for Argentina's chances in their next World Cup game against Sweden. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
