- Story Text: Indonesia is to issue an emergency anti-terrorism decree that will carry a maximum penalty of death, following weekend bomb blasts in Bali.
Meanwhile Indonesians have held a candlelight vigil in central Jakarta to remember the 182 people who died.
Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri announced on Thursday (Oct 17) that she will issue an emergency anti-terrorism decree.
The announcement came after Megawati met lawmakers led by parliamentary speaker Akhbar Tandjung at her palace in Jakarta.
"The government wants an agreement from the parliament to come out with a decree about the issue of terrorism," Megawati told reporters.
Justice minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra told reporters the maximum punishment under the proposed decree will be the death penalty.
The decree was formulated after the deadly bomb blasts in Bali last Saturday night where more than 180 people, mainly young foreigners, were killed.
"For that the government in taking actions to fight existing terrorism needs a basis of law to do so," Megawati stressed during the press conference.
Parliamentary speaker Akhbar Tandjung said lawmakers agreed with the president.
"The Parliament agrees with the government to come out with a decree. That is how parliament feels and I have told this to the president. That is all," Akhbar Tandjung said.
Later in the night, hundreds of people turned up at a busy Jakarta street held a candle-light vigil for victims of the Bali blast.
The protesters, including monks and community leaders, went around a busy Jakarta circus holding candles and banners rallying against violence and terrorism.
"The incidents in Bali and Manado are all forms of violence and terrorism. We are against terrorism," said Irwan, one of the protesters. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
