- Story Text: The Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, has visited the site where frantic rescue attempts are taking place to rescue children stuck under debris from their collapsed school after an earthquake hit the area on Thursday.
The death toll from an earthquake that rocked south-central Italy rose to 16 early on Friday (November 1), including 14 children who were crushed when a nursery school collapsed, firefighters said.
But rescue workers dug with their hands throughout the night to find more survivors in the rubble of the school in this medieval town. More than 30 people have been pulled from the debris alive. About 15 are still believed to be trapped inside.
Late on Thursday evening (October 31), Italy's prime minister Silvio Berlusconi visited the site to witness for himself the horror of the scene and survey the rescue works.
The children still trapped, have now been under the collapsed building for over 12 hours but rescue workers are hopeful they will still find more alive.
A total of 62 people, including 54 children, were in the combined nursery and elementary school when the roof over the nursery section caved in.
The tremor, the strongest to hit Italy since 1997, rocked the south-central region of Molise on Thursday morning, toppling the nursery school and leaving at least 3,000 people temporarily homeless. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
