- Story Text: Mexico's qualification for the second round in the World Cup sent thousands of fans into the streets of Mexico City and around the country, after a tie 1-1 with Italy.
Mexico's tie with Italy produced an outpouring of joy on the streets of Mexico City and other towns around the country, as thousands celebrated their country going through to the second round of the World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
From the very early hours of the morning, riot police and mounted police were deployed in downtown Mexico City, and a wide swath of one of the main city's thoroughfares, the Reforma Boulevard, was closed to vehicles.
Coffee shops were packed throughout the city with fans watching the game on giant screens.
Wearing the green national T-shirt, President Vicente Fox and First Lady Martha Sahagun were up early to watch the game with some of their aides in the presidential residence of Los Pinos. Fox jumped out of his sofa when Mexico scored during the first half of the match.
Calling for calm celebrations, Fox said: "We congratulate each and every Mexican, we congratulate our team, but we should do it making sense, show our happiness, our enthusiasm, but making good sense." He also congratulated the team's coach, Javier Aguirre.
Fox had made a bet with a group of journalists for a 1-0 Mexican victory over Italy.
Even though the game ended in a draw, Mexico won the group and qualified for the next round of the tournament. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
