- Story Text: The Turkish erupted into waves of chanting after their team's 1-0 Golden Goal win over Senegal took them into the World Cup semi-finals against Brazil.
Substitute Ilhan Miansiz scored the goal four minutes into extra time to send Turkey - competiting in its first World Cup finals for 48 years - into the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in their history.
People rushed on the streets to celebrate Turkey the win. The streets, empty during the game, suddenly became filled with celebrating with flags and chanting slogans. Thousands of jubilant Turks flocked to central squares in cities across the country.
In Taksim Square in Istanbul thousands gathered waving red Turkish flags and honking their horns. There were similar scenes in Ankara and Diyarbakir, the capital of the mainly Kurdish southeast.
The commentator for national television TRT was close to tears moments after the goal, repeating again and again: "Turkey is in the semi-final."
Turkey's mobile telephone network was blocked up with people messaging and calling each other after the match and taxi drivers providing a cacophony of noise with their horns.
Turkey will face four-times champions Brazil in a rematch in Saitama on Wednesday. When they played in the first round and Turkey had two sent off and a controversial penalty awarded against them.
"We were unlucky to lose 2-1 to Brazil -- we now have to concentrate on that match and I think it will be a great match."
