- Story Text: Austria has taken new steps to save energy, though the Chancellor, Herr Bruno Kreisky, has ruled out patrol rationing for the foreseeable future. But, he said Austrians must continue to conserve fuel, and from Monday (14 January) every austrian with a car will only be allowed to use his vehicle for six days a week -- the owner can select his own 'carless' day.
He will have to put a sticker -- a PICKERL -- inside his windscreen to show which day he has chosen. This day will also be marked on the car's documents. Anyone found driving on the wrong day will have to pay a fine.
The new measure is in addition to a speed limit on all reads, (which has already brought down the number of deaths on the road by 30%) and also a ban on garages opening on Sunday.
These measures are intended to save fuel for the summer, and the tourist season. Going without a car for one day is expected to save about 7% of normal consumption.
