- Story Text: From San Francisco to Seoul to Sydney, fans of Apple Inc paid tribute to Steve Jobs after he resigned as CEO, calling him an icon for the entire technology industry, not just the company he co-founded.
The extraordinary outpouring on blogs and Twitter began minutes after Jobs, who has been on medical leave since January, announced he would leave the chief executive's post but carry on as chairman of Apple on Thursday (August 25).
But in the southern German city of Munich, customers at the Apple store were mixed about the possible effect of the resignation.
"I don't think they will continue to be so innovative as he is the brains behind the ideas," Stefan Bott told Reuters TV.
While others said they felt the company is now so successful that it would take more than a personality to pull it down.
"I don't think it was just Steve Jobs who was behind the make but rather Apple can stand alone without Steve Jobs," one man said.
"I think there will be quite a big reaction to this but at the end of the day it will level off. As far as I'm aware he will remain in the board of directors. I don't think it will be as bad as back in the 90s when he left Apple, it won't be as bad as that. They will continue to go their own way," Michael Pappenberger said.
Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple Inc on Wednesday (August 24) and passed the reins to his right-hand man Tim Cook, saying he could no longer fulfill the duties in a stunning announcement that raised fears his health has deteriorated further.
Jobs, who fought and survived a rare form of pancreatic cancer and revolutionised the technology arena with the iPhone and the iPad in the past four years, is deemed the heart and soul of a company that recently briefly became the most valuable in America. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
