- Story Text: The United Nations and other aid organisations have
made a plea for more aid for Afghanistan at an emergency
meeting of donor nations in Berlin called to confront the
regions mounting humanitarian crisis.
According to the U.N. emergency relief coordinator the
world body would launch a formal appeal for $500 million later
on Thursday (September 27) as thousands of Afghans flee the
threat of U.S. military strikes against the ruling Taliban.
"The people of Afghanistan should know: the international
community within a political stabilisation processs is ready
to supply aid for the reconstruction of the country after
decades
of war and destruction", said the host of the conference,
German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer.
The U.N. refugee agency called on Wednesday for $252
million to help it deal with up to 1.5 million new refugees
and the some 3.5 million already in camps in Pakistan and
Iran.
The United States accuses the Taliban of harbouring Osama
bin Laden, the Saudi-born Islamic militant who Washington
blames for the September 11 suicide attacks on its cities, and
has threatened military action if he is not handed over for
trial.
