- Story Text: The Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries
(OAPEC) has held its annual end of year meeting in Cairo.
Outside the Qatari embassy, anti-war activists demonstrated
against a possible war in Iraq.
Saudi oil minister Ali Naimi said on Saturday (December
21) the Organisation Of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)
would raise its output if oil process remained above the
organisation's 28 U.S. Dollars-per-barrel price target for 20
days.
The Saudi minister was responding to questions on whether
OPEC and oil kingpin Saudi Arabia would raise output in
January to conform with the latest output.
The Organisation Of Petroleum Exporting Countries has an
informal understanding to lift output by half a million
barrels per day if the price of its reference basket exceeds
28 U.S. Dollars for 20 days.
A potent mixture of the oil stoppage in Venezuela and
fears of war in fellow OPEC member Iraq have seen oil prices
soar.
OPEC's basket price stood at 29.56 U.S. Dollars on
Thursday (December 19) while NYMEX crude for February delivery
settled on Friday (December 20) at 30.30 U.S. dollars a
barrel, gaining 11 cents on the day. The contract is up almost
2 U.S. dollars from a week ago.
The strike in Venezuela has almost completely halted
supplies from the world's fifth-largest exporter just as
Washington gears up for a possible war on Iraq.
OPEC set a new output target of 23 miliion barrels per day
and has agreed to remove up to 1.7 million barrels per day
from world markets next month.
The Saudi minister said current market volatility was not
due to supply shortage but did not elaborate.
Several OPEC ministers have said prices, which are already
above OPEC's target, were rising on fears and speculation
rather than real shortages.
Elsewhere in the city, anti-war activists demonstrated
against the possible war on Iraq.
About 700 demonstrators, including British Parliamentarian
George Gallaway, gathered in front of the Qatari Embassy.
"The Arab and Muslim world is watching the build-up to the
destruction, the invasion, the occupation and the theft of an
Arab country -- a rich Arab country of great importance indeed
sacredness in the Arab heart. When Amr Moussa said 'The gates
of hell will be open if you go ahead with this invasion of
Iraq,' he was right this is the foretaste of (what) all the
gates will look like," Gallaway said, surrounded by
demonstrators shouting in anger.
