- Story Text: Representatives of non-governmental organisation (NGOs) gathered in Paris on Tuesday (December 17) to discuss the United Nations (U.N.)-sponsored "Earth Summit" in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992.
The Paris meeting, financed by France, opened with an address by French President Francois Mitterrand then moved to discussion amongst the 800 delegates on themes for the June 1992 summit.
Topics for discussion included global warming, preservation of rain forests, diversity of species and hazardous wastes.
The delegates were mostly from the developing world and they hoped to forge a common stance for the Rio summit, where NGOs will contribute to the mainly governmental talks.
The aim of the "Earth Summit" is to agree a treaty on preserving or improving the world's environment. Arguments are already developing over the economic aspects of agreements and who will pay to clean up the environment.
The summit, officially called the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), is expected to attract leaders from 160 countries. The United Nations hopes it will result in a detailed document called Agenda 21 which will spell out actions that should be taken worldwide on all ecological threats.
