- Story Text: A five-day study group on Nursing Education in Black Africa started work at the World Health Organisation (WHO) Regional Head-Quarters in Brazzaville, the People's Republic of the Congo, on Monday (June 4th).
The meeting was attended by delegates from Dahomey, the Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania and Zaire. Its two main aims are to study the needs and resources of these countries and to fix guidelines for the formation and utilization of nursing personnel.
Dr. Alfred Quenum, Regional Director of WHO for Africa, said in his opening speech that African nursing education had nt been formulated in the countries in which it is actually applied. He suggested that health services could only be improved by greater consideration of local African needs and conditions. In this way, he said, African could break away from her colonial past.
