- Story Text: Ingrid Lafforgue of France yesterday (Friday) won the Women's Slalom gold medal at the World Alpine Ski championships in Val Gardena Italy. The silver medal was won by Barbara Cochran of the United States, and the bronze went to Michele Jacot of France.
Miss Lafforgue's total time over the two legs of the slalom was 100.44 seconds. A convincing victory over stiff opposition....but today (Saturday) she was beaten into second place in the Women's Giant Slalom by Betsy Clifford of Canada, so missing a gold medal double in the slalom events.
Barbara Cochran, 19, from Richmond, Vermont, was two seconds slower than 21-year-old Miss Lafforgue over the parallel Pradel and Rainel courses, She was fifth on the first run and second on the second run, to record an aggregate time of 102.15 seconds. For this she won the silver medal.
Michele Jacot, 18, of France missed the silver medal by only five-hundredths of a second, and had to be satisfied with the bronze. She and Miss Lafforgue are current leaders in the World Cup slalom table.
At the end of yesterday's event, France was ahead in the championships with a total of 1,332 points, with Austria second (673 points) and the United States third (474).
