- Story Text: A joint operation between Merseyside Police and Amsterdam police led to the arrest on Wednesday evening (April 4) of one of Britain's most wanted fugitives.
26-year-old Kirk B. was arrested around 1130pm in an apartment in southeast Amsterdam, Dutch police said.
Dutch police has been chasing him for three weeks, police spokesman Rob Van Der Veen said.
"Three weeks ago, we got information from the UK that he might stay in Holland. That's why we looked into that and we searched and searched and did a lot of investigations and the last few days some colleagues, some detectives from Liverpool and from the SOCA came to Amsterdam and together we were very busy investigating where Kirk was staying. And we found him yesterday night, we traced him and then a swat team arrested him inside the house."
Van Der Veen was asked if the suspect resisted arrest.
"If our swat team enters a house, you don't have any time to make any trouble. So he was apprehended without any problem."
The head of European Operations for Britain's Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) Ian Milne said in a statement the arrest showed there was no safe haven for fugitives -- even abroad.
An international search had been going for months since Kirk B. escaped from a prison van with another man last July while they were en route for trial.
Kirk B. will be extradited and transported to the UK after all the "official things have been done," Van Der Veen said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
