- Story Text: Putting its name in the record books, White House drama "The West Wing" rubbed out Mafia rival "The Sopranos", winning best drama in an upset victory at the 52nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday (September 10, 2000).
With nine of television's top awards -- including four handed out before Sunday's show -- NBC's "West Wing" set a record as the highest winning show in a single season, besting "ER" and "Hill Street Blues" which each had eight Emmys.
Heading into the awards, "West Wing" had shared the title of most-nominated show with HBO's "Sopranos," each having 18 nods, and many industry watchers had thought "Sopranos" would beat its rival after failing to win many awards last year.
Indeed, the only Emmy "Sopranos" walked away with was best actor in a drama for James Gandolfini, who portrays emotionally conflicted mafia boss Tony Soprano.
In the best comedy category, NBC's "Will & Grace," about a gay man and straight woman who are best friends, also defeated some higher-rated rivals like "Friends" and "Frasier" to become another of the night's surprise victors.
"As a gay man, I finally met a girl I want to sleep with,"
said one of the show's producers, Matt Mutchnick, holding the Emmy statue of a woman with a globe in her hands.
The night's most emotional moment came when Michael J. Fox was named best actor in a comedy for his role on "Spin City,"
which he has left to devote his time to battling Parkinson's disease. The entire audience at the Shrine Auditorium rose to give him a standing ovation.
The best actress comedy and drama honours went to longshots. Patricia Heaton, who portrays the wife of sportswriter Raymond Barone in CBS sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," claimed the Emmy for best actress in a comedy, and Sela Ward was named best dramatic actress for the ABC show "Once and Again."
The surprising victories were tied to a new Emmy voting system in which the members of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which hands out the awards, were given tapes of the shows to watch at home, then vote. Previously, they had to go to a Los Angeles hotel to watch the shows and vote. . - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
