- Story Text: Leaders attending the fifth Bali Democracy Forum arrived on Thursday (November 8), welcomed by Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The forum has attracted record numbers of heads of state, including Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak are also among 11 leaders gathering for the event.
Security was tight in the island on the forum's opening day. Indonesia police deployed 2,700 personnel, including anti-terror units to secure the event.
The Bali Democracy Forum focuses on the development of democracy in the Asia Pacific region.
Yudhoyono and Gillard will co-chair the event, along with Lee. Leaders will be presenting their views in two debates.
During the two-day meeting, leaders with 27 foreign ministers and representatives from 73 countries will discuss how democratic global governance can contribute to international peace and security, economic development and human rights in the wake of political transitions around the world.
The forum is being used as a venue for leaders to discuss the importance of the Asia-Pacific region through institutions like the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), an expert told local media. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
