- Story Text: Bahrain mourners gather for the funeral of 20-year-old protester, Mahmood Issa Al Jaziri, who died after apparently clashing with security forces.
Mourners marched at the funeral procession of a protester in Bahrain on Tuesday (March 5).
The funeral of 20-year-old Mahmood Issa Al Jaziri took place in his home town of Nabih Saleh, south-east of the capital Manama.
Video footage posted on the internet appeared to show Jaziri being injured as he clashed with security forces on February 14, which marked the second anniversary of an uprising to demand democratic reforms in the U.S.-allied Gulf Arab state.
Jaziri died from his injuries on February 22, the Gulf's main opposition movement said, but the government said there was no evidence that the police were responsible.
The funeral procession took place on Tuesday after a row between the government and Jaziri's family over where the funeral procession could be held. The family wanted to hold the funeral in Daih, west of Manama, but the Bahraini Ministry of Interior rejected this and the procession took place in his home town Nabi Saleh.
The funeral procession ended peacefully as mourners marched through the streets carrying posters and flags, some beating their chests and chanting slogans.
Mass protests erupted in February 2011 at the height of the Arab Spring and were crushed. Small demonstrations demanding greater rights for Bahrain's Shi'ite majority and an end to the absolute power of the Sunni ruling family have continued.
The kingdom saw almost daily demonstrations in the run-up to the anniversary of the revolt, putting Bahrain on the front line of a region-wide tussle for influence between Shi'ite Muslim Iran and Sunni Arab states such as Saudi Arabia. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
