- Story Text: An amateur photographer captured shocking images showing the moment a massive crane came toppling down at Sao Paulo's World Cup stadium, killing two people on Wednesday (November 27).
The footage was shot by architect and urban planner, Marcio A. Campos who said he happened to be filming at the construction site just seconds before the deadly accident at the Arena Corinthians, slated to host the opening match of the 2014 World Cup on June 12.
Campos was visiting the construction project on a technical visit with a group of architects just before the accident occurred, local media reported.
The disturbing video catches the moment the crane pitches to the side and comes crashing down damaging the stadium and coming down near where construction workers were at work.
The accident occurred as the crane was lifting a large, 420-tonne piece of the stadium's roof into place.
Workers had been scrambling to meet a December deadly to complete the stadium set by FIFA.
The crane collapse was the latest incident to cast a shadow over preparations for the Cup, which have been plagued by cost overruns, delays, and a dramatic downsizing of the public transportation projects that were supposed to be the event's main lasting legacy for Brazil's 200 million people. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
