- Story Text: U.S. aircraft fired on Iraqi positions near the village
of Kifri in northern Iraq for the first time on Saturday.
Iraqi soldiers could clearly be seen running for their lives
as the bombs were dropped.
U.S. planes flying high in the sky fired upon the Iraqi
positions on hilltops near the village of Kifri, which is 150
kms southwest of Sulaymaniyah, on Saturday (March 29, 2003).
The village is not far from where U.S. planes dropped bombs
earlier in the week on a village occupied by militant Islamic
group Ansar al-Islam, which Washington has linked to al Qaeda.
Iraqi soldiers could clearly be seen running from their
hilltop positions to try to reach the safety of bunkers before
the bombs struck.
Kurdish 'peshmerga' fighters watched from only two
kilometres away as the bombs fell.
For the past two days. U.S. planes have been bombing Iraqi
positions near Chamchamal. After two days of intensive
bombardment, Iraqi soldiers withdrew farther towards Kirkuk,
the main city in the oil-rich area.
Now it appears the U.S. planes are focussing on Iraqi
positions southwest of Sulaymaniyah. There is a good road
going from Kifri to Baghdad, the capital is only 150
kilometres to the southwest.
