- Story Text: Common Market Government heads set a condition of democracy on any aid to Portugal and decided to back the right of all states to be represented in the United nations, at a European Economic Community (EEC) leaders' summit meeting in Brussels on Thursday (17 July).
After an intense argument about Portugal, whose government was dissolved on Thursday, a summit statement claimed the EEC was willing to discuss financial aid, but noted that the EEC could "only support a pluralist democracy."
In a separate statement, the summit firmly opposed an Arab move to have Israel ejected from the United Nations General Assembly.
The statement did not mention Israel by name, but upheld the right of all states to be represented in the UN.
It said any violation of the rights of UN members would only "prevent the United Nations form playing their allotted part."
SYNOPSIS: Common Market leaders were received at the Royal Palace in Brussels by King Baudouin on Thursday. The reception took place after the morning session of the European Economic Community (EEC) leaders' summit conference, which is being held in Brussels.
The summit meeting produced two firm statements after Thursday's session. The EEC has set a condition of democracy on any aid to Portugal... and opposed an Arab move to oust israel from the United Nations General Assembly.
And in a fresh move to re-launch stalled preparations for a projected oil producers and consumers conference, the summit ordered EEC foreign ministers to develop a joint position for study by the next Common Market summit, before the end of next year. The proposed conference will cover the full range of energy, raw materials and development questions as sought by the oil exporters and their customers.
