- Story Text: Despite the prospect of teeing off alongside Tiger Woods and holder Geoff Ogilvy in Thursday's U.S. Open at the Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania, British amateur Richie Ramsay is keeping his cool.
The 23-year-old from Aberdeen became the fist British golfer in 95 years to win the U.S Amateur Championship. This qualified him the for the U.S Open, then the luck of the draw earned him the chance of partnering Woods and Ogilvy. He refuses to be overawed by his opponents.
" Obviously there's going to be a huge crowd following Tiger and also with Geoff being defending champion there's going to be a big pool as well, " he said "So I'm just going to go out there and enjoy it, focus on each shot, one at a time, just as I do back home if I'm playing with my mates back home at the golf club, take one shot at a time and hopefully that will build me up for a final good score."
" You get fortunate playing in things like the Walker Cup and the U.S. Amateur Final and a few pro events already that. I've got used to the crowds, and I feel very at home and I don't mind now if there's a lot of people out there watching it, it just makes it more fun for me and more enjoyable, so I'm just raring to go and I can't wait for that 8 o'clock to come on Thursday."
Ramsay. a 23-year-old Scot, won the amateur championship with a 4&2 win over American John Kelly at Hazeltine National last summer. The Stirling University student now receives exemptions into next year's Open, Masters and US Open if he maintains his amateur status.
Woods, a former amatuer champion himself, will be launching his bid for his 13th major at Oakmont.
