- Story Text: Dominican singer, songwriter and producer Juan Luis Guerra scored six Latin Grammy nominations on Tuesday (September 25), ahead of Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy, who earned five nods heading into Latin music's biggest night. Colombian superstar Juanes also picked up five nominations including album of the year.
Latin music artists filled the Belasco Theater stage in Los Angeles to announce the Latin Recording Academy's nominations for its 13th annual honors. Jesse & Joy, Juanes, norteno group Los Tucanes de Tijuana, singer Shaila Durcal, Colombian duo ChocQuib Town were among those announcing the nominees Juanes, who picked up several nomination for his comeback album, "MTV Unplugged," said he was honored with the recognition.
"These five nominations mean to me that the power of music is very strong, I've been in a very obscure and just weird moment with my music and I took a little break and then I started analyzing how to reconnect again with my music and that's when I came up with the new album with Juan Luis and MTV and to have five nominations is very big for me", said Juanes.
The 70 year old Brazilian singer-composer Caetano Veloso has been named as this year's Latin Recording Academy's person of the year, being honored for his life's work.
Duo Jesse & Joy were ecstatic about their five nominations for their latest album "Con quien se queda el perro?"
"With every album we try to improve what we did prior to that and yes, we did put a lot of feeling and dedication to the last album and you always dream with wonderful things to happen with it, but to see that dream come true and go beyond, you can't compare the feeling," said Jesse.
This year's Grammys allow for 10 nominees, up from five, in the general categories of record, album and song of the year, as well as best new artist. The Latin Grammys honor artists in a total of 47 categories. The Latin Grammy Awards will be presented on November 15 in Las Vegas and broadcast live on the Univision network. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
