- Story Text: Greece awakes to U.S. President Barack Obama's re-election.
Ordinary Greeks appeared to welcome the re-election of U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday (November 7), for a second term, beating Republican rival Mitt Romney.
Newspaper stands were plastered with headlines about the election, although most papers had published before the results became known.
On the streets, people interviewed by Reuters Television seemed largely favourable to his re-election.
"Let's hope he does something good in the rest of the world, like bringing peace and stopping all these wars and for people to have health and be all right. Congratulations to Obama," said Athens resident Yannis Sougalekis.
Political science professor Yannos Mitsos added: "Obama's victory symbolizes a victory for Europe - and for the whole world -. When 90 percent wanted Obama to win, that tells you something. It says that they want more cooperation with the United States, and they want the Unites States to better understand them."
Although polls put the two candidates neck and neck, Obama secured a convincing victory. Under the electoral college system, which allots votes to states according to population size, he had 303 while Romney was on 206 at 0750 GMT, with Florida yet to declare. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
