- Story Text: Muslim Brotherhood supporters clashed with police and local residents of the Ramses Square area of Downtown Cairo as they attempted to march on Tahrir Square on Sunday (October 6).
Brotherhood supporters, who are demanding the reinstatement of deposed President Mohamed Mursi, met resistance from police who fired teargas and local residents who threw stones.
Thousands of supporters of deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi marched through various neighbourhoods of Cairo on Sunday towards Tahrir Square, where pro-army supporters gathered to celebrate the anniversary of an attack on Israeli forces in 1973.
But a heavy military presence stopped them reaching the square, which was the rallying point for protesters during the revolt that toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011.
Egyptian authorities had warned on Saturday (October 5) that anyone who protested against the army during the October 6 ceremonies would be regarded as an agent of foreign powers, not an activist.
Army chief General Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, the man who ousted Mursi on July 3, has promised a political roadmap would bring free and fair elections and stability to Egypt. The Muslim Brotherhood has rejected the political transition, saying the army-backed government installed by Sisi is illegitimate.
Clashes between Mursi supporters and police broke out in several other cities, including Alexandria, Suez and Aswan with a death toll from the day's clashes reaching 28 and more than 90 were wounded, according to the latest health ministry figures. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
