'I'll Be Missing You' when we won that, that was less of a surprise because it was such a huge album but this year, I'm nominated for my own album, which was an independent release on my own imprint, so I'm still in shock. It's an honor." ALEKS SYNTEK ON CARPET (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ALEKS SYNTEK, GRAMMY NOMINEE, SAYING: "It's huge because most people don't see that the Grammy Academy is made up of producers, and artists and musicians and they believe it's the popularity with the fans and it's not at all. It's more difficult to get this chance. To be nominated is totally amazing for any artist and for me it's a challenge to keep going and I hope this isn't the last time I'll be here. I love this glamour and all the connections to meet people." OZZY OSBOURNE ON CARPET DAFT PUNK ON CARPET GRAMMY GRAMOPHONE STATUE WIDE OF CARPET

- Story Text: Robin Thicke, Madonna, Pharrell and more hit the Grammy red carpet in Los Angeles on Sunday (January 26).
"It's a huge thing and we don't make a distinction between music and art," said Malik Jones, one of the people who worked on Kanye West's song "New Slaves," nominated for a Grammy. "Music is art and we have to be clear on understanding that. Art can change people. Art can get to people's heart, their souls, their idea of themselves, that's what we try to put out."
Rapper-producer duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis later won the Grammy award for best new artist. Robin Thicke performed at the show with legendary rock band Chicago, who won a Grammy in 1977.
"Getting to the Grammys is one of the byproducts of just enjoying what you do for a living," said Chicago founding member Lee Loughnane. "The thing for me, you start the song and you never stop until you get to the end, so if you make mistakes on the way through, if you keep going, no one notices."
In early awards before the telecast from Los Angeles' Staples Center began, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis swept the rap categories - best rap album, song and performance. Pharrell Williams won music producer of the year for his work with artists including Robin Thicke, Jay Z and Jennifer Hudson.
The 56th Grammy Awards, the music industry's top honors handed out by the Recording Academy across 82 categories, may be remembered more for its performances and unscripted moments than the awards that are bestowed. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
