- Story Text: Despite the success of Brazils' Alcohol Fuel programme, the government is under increasing pressure to raise the domestic price of the fuel. About 800 million US dollars has been spent in support of the industry and until recently this money has been considered well spent. But the programme is now being measured in colder economic terms, becoming entangled in Brazil's broader financial crisis. The country has to sharply reduce an estimated 11 billion US dollar budget deficit this year. As a result, the alcohol fuel subsidy has been eyed as a prime target for cuts.
