- Story Text: KFOR (Kosovo Protection Force) looks set to bolster
its forces in time for Kosovo's province's forthcoming
elections.
KFOR Commander General Juan Ortuno said Saturday (July
29) that the force would be reinforced by more soldiers in
time for the province's elections.
Speaking at the opening ceremony for a new railway track
which will link two major cities in Kosovo - Prizren and Pec
- said: "t's in our planning with UNMIK, Its in the planning
for UNMIK - police and KFOR - to bring in some extra presence
of forces in the election period and it is now going on and we
will have these troops in this period."
He said: "I am very impressed with the impact that
elections is having on Kosovo - the response given by the
great majority to the registration process, the impact on the
political parties that are organising themselves. It is a
tremendous, practical execise of democracy".
As he spoke General Ortuno travelled along a railway line
which will be used for the movement of troops from one part of
the country to another, avoiding two busy roads.
The opening ceremony began in Kosovo Polje on the
outskirts of Pristina.
Later in the day General Ortuno inspected the work of
Italian soldiers in rebuilding a bridge which was destroyed
during last year's NATO bombing.
