- Story Text: Hundreds of people, mostly women, marched through the streets of Istanbul on Tuesday (April 18) for a second night to protest the result of a constitutional referendum that granted sweeping new powers to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan.
People have been demonstrating in big cities since Sunday (April 16) after calls on social media for protests in several cities.
The result of the referendum on Sunday laid bare the deep divide between the urban middle classes, who see their future as part of a European mainstream, and the pious rural poor who favour Erdogan's strong hand. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
