- Story Text: Egypt's top tennis star, Ismail El Shafei, retained his Egyptian International Men's Lawn Tennis Championship crown on Sunday (10 March) when he beat France's Francois Jauffret in the final match at Cairo's Gezira Sporting Club.
It was El Shafei's third championship win. He won last year and in 1969. Only two other players have surpassed his performance -- the great Jaroslav Brobny and Nikki Pietrangeli. Both won the championships four times.
The two players reached the finals after five rounds of elimination matches. Over forty top players from Europe, North Africa and Asia had competed in the first round. In the semi-finals, Jauffret had defeated kakulia of the Soviet Union 6-3, 4-6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. El Shafei defeated Szuke of Hangary in straight sets.
In the final, the Egyptian began as though he was going to repeat his easy win against the Hungarian. He took the first set 6-2 but in the next set, Jauffret struck back to win a set and put them level. But Jauffret's counter-attack only served to re-vitalise El Shafei's game again. By the end of the third set, the Frenchman looked a loser. El Shafei won 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
