- Story Text: A Japanese man has been killed in Venezuela after he and his wife were kidnapped by unknown assailants.
A Japanese businessman was killed after he and his wife were kidnapped in Venezuela on Sunday (November 17, 2002), according to police.
Sixty-seven-year-old Akira Amemiya Midukami and his 60-year-old wife Yoko Yoshica de Amemiya were snatched by four kidnappers near their home in San Cristobal, said investigators.
"They took the two victims, a man and a woman in a four-wheel drive vehicle. They took them to the high point of this city. They left their vehicle, a Toyota Camry, abandoned and took them away in a vehicle like a Cherokee," stated the Director of the Technical Judicial Police Jose Clavino.
On Monday (November 18) police received word from neighborhood residents in the city of Lobatera that they were hearing noises which sounded like someone being tortured.
The police raided the location, and exchanged gunfire with the kidnappers. Amemiya was killed during the shootout. The suspects escaped, taking the wife with them, according to the reports.
Investigators are continuing to look for Yoshica.
Amemiya, who had lived in Venezuela for more that 50 years, had obtained Venezuelan citizenship while his wife held Japanese citizenship. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
