- Story Text: Brazil's Emerson Fittipaldi set up the fastest time during the first day's practice on Friday (25 January) before the brazilian Grand Prix at Interlages, Sad Paulo, on Sunday (17 January). He was more than a second faster than Argentina's Carlos Reutemann in a Brabham.
Fittipaldi's fastest lap of the 7,980 metre circuit, was two minutes 32.87 seconds. Reutemann clocked 2.34.09, which was one hundredth of a second faster than Nicki Lauda of Astria in a Ferrari. Sweden's Ronnie Peterson in a Lotus had exactly the same time as Lauda.
The practice laps on Friday were held in a scorching temperature of 40 centigrade (104 Fahrenheit). The hot sun gave many drivers trouble as they tore through the sixteen sharp bends on the lakeside circuit. The engine of one British driver -- Richard Robarts -- blew up as his Brabham was on the first lap of the second practice session. He escaped from the burning vehicle as fireman smothered the flames with foam.
Britain's Mike Hailwood in a McLaren, set up the fifth fastest time, followed by Clay Regazzoni of Italy in the second team Ferari. By the end of the day Regazzoni's countryman Arturo Merzario, lay in seventh position in an Iso.
The Brazilian Grand Prix will help to sort out the leaders in the battle for this year's World Drivers Championship. Because of the retirement of last year's Champion -- Jackie Stewart of Scotland -- the competition this year will be wide open.
