- Story Text: Frenchman Philippe Borel won Europe's toughest alpine racket race in Aussois, France on Sunday (March 9).
Some sixty racers challenged the French Alps for the sixth running of the event.
Contestants, walking on racket shoes and aided by nothing else than ski poles, reached an elevation of 2076 metres and an altitude of 3100 metres at the Pointe de Bellecote, in the National Park of Vanoise. The racers, all equipped with avalanche victim detectors, covered some 16.5 kilometres.
Frenchman Philippe Borel took home the title in 3 hours, 4 minutes, 43 seconds, one minute forty seconds faster than Patrick Lambert also of France.
The women's race was dominated by Frenchwoman Isabelle Margueron, who managed to finish the race despite only having one racket shoe, as the other was broken on the first hill.
Margueron clocked 4 hours, 25 minutes, 11 seconds. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
