- Story Text: The French electorate are being shown the voting machines they will use for the first time in the first poll of the French Election on March 4.
Demonstrations are being given in town halls to make sure voters will press the correct button to select the candidate of their choice.
The voting machines -- 545 of them will be used in middle sized town and city departments -- are an experiment. Ballot boxes will be used elsewhere.
Three types are being used -- one electronic, one mechanical and the other a combination, to see which is best.
But they have not been universally popular. It has been reported that Corsicans regard the machines as a personal affront, implying doubts about their ability or honesty.
SYNOPSIS: France's official month-long election campaign is now in full swing. And Paris is decked out in election posters for the first poll on March the fourth.
But this election will be different. For the first time democracy in France is being partly automated. Many French voters will press the buttons of a voting machine to choose their candidate instead of marking ballot papers.
In town halls throughout the country the new voting method is being demonstrated.
The scheme is an experiment. Three different types of machines are being tried to see which is best. And the machines -- five-hundred-and forty-five of them -- will only be used this time in middle-sixed towns and city departments. The machines have not been universally accepted. In Corsica they are not popular at all. Corsicans have been reported as saying that the voting machines implied doubts about their ability and honesty.
