- Story Text: The fierce fighting in the Dominican Republic has badly disrupted communications with that country. Getting film out up till no has been impossible. However, film has finally emerged of the early part of the revolt.
Crowds swarmed into the streets to celebrate what they thought was the overthrow of the government and the imminent return of the ousted president, Juan Bosch.
A stringent economy had sparked their dissatisfaction. Overhead, there were planes of General Wessin y Wessin that were later to turn back the pro-Bosch tide. But Sunday the crowds were jubilant and they were also violent, mobbing a number of government buildings.
The rebels also set up cannons later used against Wessin's tanks that pushed into the city only to be driven out again.
Wessin's planes also caused extensive damage in intermittent bombings. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
