- Story Text: The Dominican Republic has tightened security ahead of the start of the XIV Pan American Games.
In contrast to many logistical problems and delays in venue completions, security was tight throughout the Dominican Republic as officials prepared for the start of the Pan American games.
"We have under my command around 7,500 men without counting the rest of the Armed Forces which are around 40,000 men. It is a large number because the entire country will be watchful of the games," said Security Chief, General Gustavo Adolfo Jorge.
He said all steps have been taken to guarantee the safety of athletes, delegations, and tourists during the games which will be held August 1-17th.
Jorge also said other countries had been consulted on security measures to prevent any type of attack.
"We have taken advice from Israeli, United States, Cuban, and officials from other countries. We are exchanging information with Colombia, Cuba, United States, Canada, etc," he said.
It is the first time the Caribbean nation of
5-million inhabitants hosts the Pan American games in which over 5,000 athletes from 42 countries will participate. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
