- Story Text: An unauthorized Spanish-language version of the fifth Harry Potter book has surfaced in Chile.
As if by magic, an illegal Spanish-language version of the fifth book starring boy wizard Harry Potter has appeared on the streets of Chile, months before it was scheduled for official release.
"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," the fifth in J.K. Rowling's series about a school for young wizards and witches, debuted in English on June 21, but has yet to be released in the Spanish speaking world.
"This speaks to the seriousness of the situation. That is, when this book was going to be presented in Chile or in our language in approximately four months and we were even playing with the possibility of releasing it in March of the coming year", said Eduardo Castillo, president of the Chilean Book Chamber business group, said at a news conference.
"Not only is it illegal, not only is it a pirate copy, it's a really bad translation," he added and implored Chileans not to buy the illegal book, which he said threatened to harm the country's legitimate book sellers.
Castillo blamed deep-pocketed organized criminals for investing in production of the pirate edition, which he said was not cheap on the streets at more than $15 U.S.
dollars a copy.
It was not clear whether the illegal translation, which is not even a complete version of the book, was produced in Chile or brought in from elsewhere.
Pirated versions and unofficial translations of the best seller have appeared everywhere from Pakistan to Germany. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
